Star Trek Fans Rejoice
May 17, 9:00 am

After watching the 2009 J.J. Abrams version of Star Trek, I couldn’t help but instantly go through my DVD collection and watch all of the previous movies in one sitting and with the help of the internet, get myself a full Spock costume to wear around my apartment or…to wear in public. Watching Quinto and Pine bring Spock and Kirk back to life made my heart skip and I felt an overwhelming sense of realization as to why I’m so obsessed with the series itself. Being a military child and moving frequently in my youth, the one consistent thing my parents kept alive was week nights filled with Tribbles, logic, and Commander Data. Not that I wasn’t into Star Wars, but the insane diversity I saw in the Star Trek series blew my mind and the fact that I could get emotionally involved in each episode did more for me than any Disney movie could ever do.
As I got older I moved my obsession from not only movies and television reruns, to reading books and comics related to the series. Soon after that, I related my infatuation to video games. I’d played a few of the games that were out on XBLA, Wii, and 360, but found myself completely disappointed. I wanted a good console game that would keep me from throwing my controller if I couldn’t save the Kobayashi Maru. I sat with fingers crossed that someday, someone would put together a well-made Star Trek game and that this one would keep me playing for hours.

Soon after the release of the movie, a rumor of a new Star Trek game emerged and a simple trailer was released to keep fans on the edge of their seat. I was one of them. Until now, not much has been said about the game and only until recently, the making of Star Trek II which is set to release in May of 2013. This morning however, my day was brightened with concept art from Paramount Pictures and Namco Bandai. Before I could stop squealing at the pictures I noticed that a new trailer had crawled its way into my media player.

Top 5 best Science Fiction
Apr 27, 9:00 am

Science fiction is rayguns and time travel, dystopian setting and post-apocalyptic America, little green men and mutants, robots and droids, close to home and near the far reaches of the galaxy. It redefines reality and speculates on the hope of a future we have never seen before. Most of all, science fiction is an escape. While discussing the topic of science fiction with others, the following is what I believe to be the top sci-fi games, books, movies and comics in pop culture.
Games:

5. Metro 2033 – This game is one of the most realistic sci-fi games I have ever played, but is also one of the most underrated. Based off of a Russian novel, Metro has fascinating concepts such as the fourth reich versus the communists, bullet currency, and relying on survivability with your gas mask and watch. This post-apocalyptic sci-fi shooter is worth playing before the release of the sequel this year.
4. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – KotOR is what many would consider to be the culmination of all Star Wars games. The game had everything – lightsaber battles, gun firefights, swoop racing (way better than pod racing), excellent voice acting and one crazy plot twist. For sci-fi fans and Star Wars nerds, I would highly recommend this RPG.
3. System Shock 2 – If you are a fan of BioShock, check this game out. The “Shock” in the title of this game is not just a coincidence. Before BioShock blew your mind, System Shock 2 had all the plot twists, cheap thrills, and survival horror that BioShock contained.
2. Mass Effect 2 – This is my favorite game on the Citadel. I honestly do not know what to say about the Mass Effect series that has not already been said. It certainly deserves all of the praise it gets. In particular, Mass Effect 2 had characters I identified with more than I have in any other game. The Mass Effect series remains one of the greatest science fiction video games of all time.
1. Half-Life 2 – I have always wanted to smack something with a crowbar, and doing so in this game makes me feel like a boss. In all seriousness, Half-Life 2 is a highly acclaimed, classic game with excellent elements of science fiction from the terrifying headcrabs to the chilling aura of G-Man. Although it was released many years ago, I am still blown away by the Half-Life series. Despite giving up on the idea of Half-Life 3 being released, I still have a speck of hope that it may happen one day.
5. Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy – Hailed as a sci-fi classic and guaranteed to make you laugh out loud, this is one of the most witty books to come to the unfashionable end of the western spiral arm of the galaxy. Most importantly, this book teaches you that the meaning to life, the universe and, everything else is, quite simply, 42.
4. Ender’s Game – Some may believe that this story is somewhat juvenile; however, I find it to be a classic piece of science fiction in our culture. It certainly demonstrates a deep relationship between children and adults, showing that children can be just as intelligent as adults and the two share similar qualities. The story has many mature elements and themes of compassion and ruthlessness that leaves your mind blown.
3. The Stars My Destination – An excellent novel that some would describe as The Count of Monte Cristo “in space”, rather the protagonist finds enlightenment and awakens humanity. The story is incredibly modern for the time it was written. It also includes excellent character development that toys with your emotions.
2. A Clockwork Orange – I remember being utterly confused while reading this book. However, that is the nature of the dystopian genre. A Clockwork Orange is another book that makes you think. I cannot explain much else about this book other than saying if you have not read this classic yet, I highly suggest doing so.
1. Dune – This is a classic series, and I would have to say that the first book is my favorite. Before the entire culture of Star Wars existed, Dune was the icon of its time. Frank Herbert was able to make a society and mold it into ways that science fiction that was not able to do in the past. Dune is able to capture your imagination on a grand scale because you get caught up in a different culture.
5. Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope – When this film released, no one asked, “Have you seen it?”, instead they asked, “How many times have you seen it?” Star Wars impacted science fiction culture as we know it and it is impossible to mention science fiction without thinking of Star Wars. It is iconic and classic – to this day it remains popular. Many agree that the film was ahead of its time, and George Lucas revolutionized films as we know them.
4. Serenity – I cannot say that there are many space westerns out there, but Serenity tops the list. The action is heavy, the crew is memorable, and the dialogue is great. From the mind of Joss Whedon comes an incredible film based off a cancelled TV show. Browncoats were in uproar over the loss of their show so Universal decided to make a film that became one of the highest grossing in 2005. As they said in Firefly’s theme, “I don’t care, I’m still free, You can’t take the sky from me.”
3. TRON – By far one of my favorite movies of all time, TRON is a story that captivated me from a young age. From a gamer’s perspective, the entire concept of TRON is fascinating. I feel that TRON is underappreciated, but that does not decrease from its greatness.
2. Fifth Element – There is something about this movie that makes it the second best on my list. The story in Fifth Element is personal, but at the same time it involves a grand scheme of conflict. Despite how big the universe is in Fifth Element, there is still a feeling of intimacy with the characters. The movie includes a colorful, exciting, fascinating, universe that everyone would love to go on vacation and it also has crazy friends you wish you could have in the real world.
1. Blade Runner – This is most definitely the capstone of all sci-fi films. Based off the novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by prominent author Phillip K. Dick, this movie tops most “top lists” of science fiction films for a good reason. It is gritty, cyberpunk, and many other films use it as their inspiration to this day. Oh, and it has Harrison Ford.
5. Planetary – This series is by far one of my favorite science fiction comics to date. Although it is only 27 issues long, Planetary received several nominations and awards for its amazing story. The series is beyond what one would categorize as a superhero genre, it takes the idea of superheroes and science fiction to a new level. What I loved most about this series was seeing famous DC superheroes in an alternate depiction. I will not say anything further in order to avoid spoilers, so check it out for yourself.
4. Marvel Superheroes Secret Wars – While it can be debated whether this story arc is true science fiction, I believe that it should be considered because of the sci-fi elements that take place within the Marvel Universe. The Marvel superheroes must battle a cosmic being in space, and it remains a classic among comic fans because it is one of the first superhero collaborations.
3. Silver Surfer – In my mind, this Marvel character defines many elements of science fiction while having an excellent storyline. The Silver Surfer is a misunderstood character that has a unique relationship with his master, Galactus. It is interesting to see how their relationship develops. I would highly recommend reading Surfer’s story in Fantastic Four and also reading his own series.
2. V for Vendetta – This graphic novel is a classic and can be considered science fiction because it is more or less like George Orwell’s 1984. Nonetheless, this story has become a cult classic for many comic readers and certainly deserves its increasing popularity. It is one that leaves you thinking about society, government, and life in general.
1. Fear Agent – This story tops my list of science fiction comics because it is an excellent and enjoyable series that tells of the many adventures of a spaceman named Heath Hutson. He is a very relatable character that I identified with while reading about his adventures in space. The story includes many plot twists and deep storylines. On top of that, it is visually stunning with artwork by Tony Moore. Many would agree that Fear Agent is a series that captures the true essence of science fiction in comics.

Healthy Gaming Snacks

Healthy Gaming Snacks
Let’s admit it, we’re all busy. When we sit down to play games and unwind, we want something quick and convenient, and that usually means unhealthy. Our hands automatically reaching for chips, nachos, pizza, cookies, and gummy bears, means we’re consuming way too much sugar, fat, and empty calories. Wouldn’t it be great if there were some healthy alternatives? Fear not! Here are two healthy snacks that are so simple, you can make them yourself.
Sweet Potato Fries
1-2 sweet potatoes (they may be listed as yams at the supermarket)
1 tablespoon grape seed oil (use just enough to coat)
Salt to taste
Sweet potatoes are overlooked when you think of healthy foods. They are full of antioxidants like beta-carotene (as much as carrots), fiber, and vitamin A. Because of the fiber in sweet potatoes, they will keep you fuller longer, which will reduce the amount of snacking you do. In this recipe we will be baking the sweet potatoes, reducing the amount of oil needed, and using grape seed oil. Grape seed oil is full of omega six fatty acids and has a high smoke point, so it won’t burn at high temperatures.

First, clean the potatoes. Potatoes are a root vegetable, so they are naturally going to be dirty, so make sure you scrub then really well. You can peel the potatoes if you so desire, I prefer the skins on.

Next, cut the potatoes into fries. The easiest way to do this is keep cutting the potato in half until you get the size you want. Potatoes oxidize quickly, so put the cut potatoes in cold water until you’re ready to bake. Pat the potatoes dry and toss them with oil, just enough to coat them. Season the fries. You can use whatever kind of seasonings you want from salt, to curry powder, to paprika.

Spread evenly on a baking sheet and bake at 400F for 30-40 minutes, turning halfway through.
Greek Yogurt Smoothie
6oz plain Greek yogurt
6oz frozen fruits (I used a berry mix)
½ cup milk

This is a great alternative to soda, ice cream, or an energy drink. The reason we’re going with Greek yogurt instead of regular yogurt is because it has double the protein, and half the carbs with the same amount of calories, meaning Greek yogurt will also keep you fuller for longer.

For this all you need is a blender. Put the plain yogurt, frozen fruit, milk and honey into a blender. Blend and you’re done! The honey is to taste so put however much or little that you want. The great thing about smoothies is you can add whatever fruit you want. If you decide to use fresh fruit instead of frozen, just add ice cubes.
There are lots of other great healthy snacks that you can make like trail mixes, veggies and dip, tea, and fruit salads. By making these at home you can put whatever you like and leave out the things you don’t. So before you go get that bag of chips, or that box of cookies, remember there are lots of healthier options that taste just as good!

Skylanders: My Obsessive Adventure
Apr 24, 9:00 am

My family’s obsession with Skylanders started just before the toys disappeared off the store shelves and began appearing on Ebay for hundreds of dollars. Some of you may think, “OK, what’s the big deal?”
Depending on what you want and the kind of gamer you are there is a lot that makes Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure worth the purchase.
Personally, I bought the game because I only heard good reviews about it, the quality of the game and toys was great (I happen to be a toy collector), and I’m always looking for a fun coop game.
If you are still on the fence about the game or have the game and have questions I’ll try to answer some of the most popular questions or comments I’ve seen online from other current or future “Portal Masters.”
This just looks like an expensive gimmick. It will be popular for a year and die out. Why should I bother, I’ve been disappointed before?
First, cheer up sunshine. I’ve been disappointed by expensive gimmicks too. Anyone remember N-Gage? Yeah, I still have mine in some dusty box. I like to pretend I paid so much for the N-Gage Ghost Recon: Jungle Storm game. So I was wary about the whole Skylanders thing too.
I just decided to go ahead and purchase it as an early birthday present for my husband. The figurines and game alone make it worth the purchase. Activision and Toys for Bob have stated that the toys will be compatible in all future titles, so there is definite value in the game as an investment that won’t go to waste.
I can say with certainty that I’ve played with Skylander’s more than the Xbox camera and Eye Toy put together. Almost every innovative move by game companies like Nintendo have been looked at as gimmicks at some point or another. At what point does a game or toy tech stop being a “gimmick” and become innovative? I think this is really up to the person who plays with the game or toy and what enjoyment they get out of it.
What’s the point in getting the game if you can’t even find any of the toys in stores?
Activision has actually re-released the first and second wave of toys and the third wave will be in stores in a few months. You just need the initial toys in the starter pack to complete the game and unlock all the achievements or trophies and one of each of the eight elements to unlock each level. You can also unlock bonus stages or worlds buy purchasing the four adventure packs.

All the adventure packs also come with add-ons like special weapons or items that can help you fight enemies.
I do admit it sucks that they don’t give you one of every element off the bat and hopefully they release a holiday bundle that does.
Some luck and persistence goes a long way to find the missing toys you are looking for. If you have doubles make sure to swap with friends, family, or post on message boards. You can also temporarily swap ownership with friends to access any area you are missing and just give the toy back to your friend or family.
My hubby and I have had the most luck at Toys R’ Us, Target, and Wal-Mart. There are also reasonably priced toys on Amazon. Personally I would stay away from Ebay for anything other than the limited variant figurines. Not only do I hate supporting folks that buy up all the toys leaving none for kids or folks that actually plan on playing the game, but you definitely don’t have to shell out so much for the regular wave of toys.
As an added bonus for purchasing at Toys R’ Us, they were giving away $5 Skylander’s gift cards for every adventure pack or three character bundle.

That promotion is over but as the new toys are released you can bet on more retail promotions showing up.
Gas is expensive! Remember you can do a lot of leg work online and over the phone.
Money grubbing %@$!@*%$ they are already coming out with another game and it hasn’t even been a year?
It’s true, Skylander’s Giants comes out Fall of this year. While it’s a whole new game with extra levels, about 20 new characters, and a few new toys including ones twice the size of the first Skylanders toys, all the older Skylanders will be compatible with the new game. I think we can stop being surprised that video game companies want and need money and they will do everything they can to get it including releasing a new game in a series every year, building a whole event around one or two of their most popular games, or creating new content for games not included on the original game.
For some reason I don’t mind shelling out some cash for these awesome little toys unlike purchasing a hat or a shirt for my avatar on Xbox or a set of three maps in a game. I suppose since its more of a tangible purchase I can justify it more. Plus, each Skylander toy is getting more use than my avatar and her virtual teddy bear.
?Are they crappy toys? Will they survive hurricanes, fire, tornados, flooding, repeat toilet flushings? Are they just glorified McDonald’s toys?
No, they are not crappy. For the second question-possibly, nope, probably not, probably, and most likely, but ew, why would you want them after that? If you are a parent or collector, find a nice visible high shelve for when you or your kids are not playing with the toys. Like other expensive tech toys this is an investment. They are pretty durable but I’m sure normal wear will eventually ruin the paint. Bath time fun with Barbie or mud pies in the yard will definitely advance the natural wear of the toy.
Also, have you walked through most toy aisle lately? It’s hard to find a great quality toy or figurine for $10 or under. For what you pay this is a great toy. No doubt if they were $15, folks would still purchase it and it would still be worth the value.
I wish McDonald’s would release special Skylanders toys. I doubt they would want to spend so much to make toys of the same quality though. Really the only one that looks like it could be a McDonald’s pull back toy is Lightning Rod. Slap some wheels on him and watch him go!
Is this really a Spyro game?
Yes and no. Toys for Bob chose the Spyro series out of all the Activision titles because it’s a recognizable name and a great way to introduce Spyro to new people. I really wouldn’t call it a true Spyro title since you can play the entire game without him and it doesn’t exactly play like a Spyro title, however the DS version definitely feels like a Spyro game. Regardless, it’s still fun!
Who are the best characters to buy and play with?
I’m referring to the playability of each character and not the retail value of each toy. I really think it’s personal to every player since each character can play a level differently and they each have their own cool abilities. I can say the characters with ranged attacks have a definite advantage. My three favorites are Trigger Happy, Legendary Trigger Happy, Stealth Elf, and Drobot. Lightening Rod is one of my new favorites, I think it’s because he looks like Robin Williams as the genie. So far we just need three more characters: Camo, Warnado, Wham-Shell to complete the collection : )

I have all the toys and now I’m bored. What now?
Well, my friend, it appears you got a rush from the chase. It’s that interesting phenomena that happens when you hear something is “limited” or “only so many people can find it.” It doesn’t matter what “it” is, you want it and what to be part of the folks who have it.
There is totally nothing wrong with that except that you exhaust any enjoyment you would have had if you had just enjoyed it or in this case the game for the sake of the game.
I suggest trying out the battle arena with friends or family if you haven’t yet. It needs a little work, but it’s still fun. Also consider leveling up each of the characters you do have for when the next game comes out. If you just liked chasing down the toys try finding some for friends or relatives or keeping tabs of toy shipments for people online and updating a forum thread with updated info.

Skylanders: My Obsessive Adventure
