Come into my World

From Top Left, Clockwise: Animal Crossing: Wild World, Oblivion, Jet Set Radio Future, Splinter Cell: Double Agent
Personally, I love games that swallow me into their world. I love feeling like part of the game’s universe, however big or small. Oblivion did a terrific job - a giant, varied, fantasy world for the player to explore. But equally, I can find my mind wandering to the cell-shaded, groove-tastic experience of Jet Set Radio Future. I loved strolling around quaint shops and houses in Animal Crossing: Wild World, and I equally loved charging through endless meadows in Shadow of the Colossus. Even games where the landscape can be cruel or harsh, like the tension-filled levels of Splinter Cell: Double Agent or the sundrenched locales of Grand Theft Auto, still invoke a feeling of jealousy within me. If only I could really visit that world - touch and experience what the characters experience. Not that I’d really want to crawl through terrorist bases or get shot by homies you understand - but to see and feel the environments and climates and places first hand would be something else.
Dead or Alive Xtreme 2
But if I had to pick a particular in-game universe, which one would I choose? The shifting, mysterious world of Zelda: Twilight Princess? Zack Island from Dead or Alive Xtreme 2? Or how about Final Fantasy VII?
Midgar, Final Fantasy VII
I know it’s all a pipe-dream, but it’s fun to imagine, isn’t it?

Last night as I lay in bed, watching the alarm clock steadily ticking towards 2am, I wondered what it would be like to live in another world.
Video games are a wonderful form of escapism. Each game is a journey, an experience. No matter what the real world may bring, you can come home, turn on a console, and instantly be transported to any number of other worlds. Sometimes we play to forget. Sometimes we play to learn. Sometimes we play simply because there’s nothing good on the TV. But rarely is our experience anything less than wonderful.
