Sharpshooter and Deathmatch… They both mean one thing - whoever gets the most kills wins. It’s that simple, and you lot seem to like it.
By “you lot”, I mean the vast majority of players on my Xbox Live and PS3 friends list. Whether it be Call of Duty 3, Gears of War, Resistance or Rainbow Six: Vegas, you seem to just lap it up. And why shouldn’t you? This game type is consistently the most popular across the board, no matter which game or platform.
If you’re a first-person or third-person shooter fan, chances are you’re a fan of this mode. Which is a little unfortunate for me, as I’m not.
As in Sarin’s previous blog, I find myself adrift in a sea of gamers, all intensely excited about something that I am not. Doesn’t it all get a little reptetitive? Don’t you ever fancy a change? Sure, you can jiggle it up a bit with solo and team play, but what about all those lovely customisable game modes in GRAW 2? It seems utterly ludicrous to me that gamers can have so many different modes at their disposal, and yet only play a couple. It’s not even like you necessarily try them all out before hand - I’ve hosted many an enjoyable game on Objective: Flag Carry (otherwise known as ‘hold-onto-the-flag-as-long-as-possible-before-you-get-blown-up’), with veteran gamers admitting they’d never played it before. How about a nice game on Territory: Siege, or Team Battle? It doesn’t have to be all about stacking up kills.
How about a nice R6: Vegas game on Retrieval, eh?
Then there’s my favourite, of course - Team Eliminaton on Last Man Standing. You just can’t beat it on GRAW 2, a game that is primarily about tactics and communication. With sharpshooter you don’t get the thrill, the sense of anticipation and thuddering in your heart, the knowledge that one shot could take you out of the game until the next round. Maps take on a whole new perspective. Every rock and crevice on Nowhere takes on a sinister edge. Every minute sound effect on Crash Site scares you witless. Think you can skip and hop along with your microphone on mute and ignore your drone? Forget it! You’re dead! Last Man Standing really makes you think, and really forces you to work together as a team in a way that Sharpshooter never can.
So next time you find yourself playing GRAW 2, or Resistance, or whatever else tickles your fancy, why not give all those other lovely modes a go? You never know - you might just enjoy it.
