Crackdown: My addiction to orbs
Feb 27, 6:05 pm

I don’t feel so great today. I got up and headed straight to Starbucks, a bit shaky and tired and slightly irritable. I barked ‘Tall Wet Latte!’ at the pleasant girl behind the counter who, in my own mind, I like to call Lickyface. Lickyface asks me if I had a heavy night. It was pretty heavy. I drove a car into the sea, took out a drugs baron, blew up an oil rig and stood in a skip while my friend ran around holding both the skip and I above his head before launching us into a crowd of screaming passers-by. That was the best bit. So yeah a pretty heavy night. I didn’t tell Lickyface all that. She wouldn’t have understood. But you understand don’t you? You understand how even in the middle of Starbucks I could hear a ‘whom, whom, whom, ping!’ sound of Agility Orb collecting, right?

I’m loving Crackdown. It’s one of those games that isn’t a genius masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination, but somehow it just gets under your skin.  Before you know it, all you care about is orbs. Gotta have the orbs!  All that matters to me is following that ‘heartbeat in the womb’ type noise emanating from them and collecting up those lovely coloured lights of stat-increasing goodness. I’ve started checking in alleyways and looking up at rooftops in real life just in case, you know?

I’m crazy with the Crackdown right now. I look back at my interview with the fabulously insane Brian Baglow at the Edinburgh International Entertainment Festival last year. He told me how great Crackdown was going to be as he wildly flung his arms about and in a voice almost impeaching me to understand about the jumping. The great, great jumping. I nodded and smiled and said ‘yes, yes’ but I didn’t really know. I thought he was a mental, only it turns out he probably wasn’t before he played Crackdown. Now just like Brian I find myself blabbering incoherently to people about the orbs and the jumping - jumping oh so high.

Here’s the EIEF video feature.  Brian turns up about half way through to talk Crackdown.
